Health Industry Business Communications Council®  (HIBCC)

Setting Safer Standards

HIBCC®, the Health Industry Business Communications Council, is an industry supported and internationally accredited nonprofit standards development organization with a global reach. We develop standards that meet the unique requirements of the world’s healthcare providers.

Our sole focus is setting safer standards for the healthcare industry. The medical field demands certain patient safety considerations, and our goal is to meet them by developing appropriate standards for information exchange and communication among all healthcare trading partners.

Our scope includes a wide variety of standards, from Auto-ID/bar code labeling and UDI Compliance to location identifiers and electronic commerce. In all cases we continue to emphasize “safety first”. Whether you’re here to create a bar code, learn more about Unique Device Identifiers (UDI), or to access the Health Industry Number (HIN) System, we are here to assist.

For additional information send us an email, or call us at 855-HIBCC-UDI or 877-GET-HINS.

Create HIBC Bar Code/UDI Structures

HIBC Auto-ID/bar code structures provide the first step toward creating the Unique Device Identifier (UDI)  and Universal Product Numbers (UPN) that are now required for healthcare trading partners to do business.

Our Auto-ID/Bar Code Utility will enable you to create HIBC-UDI data structures for product labeling according to the HIBC Supplier Labeling Standard.

The HIN Resource Center

The HIN System was developed by the health care industry to support the needs of all trading partners participating in the health care supply chain. The HIN Resource Center provides all the tools necessary to manage your HIN processes.

The Health Industry Number System (HIN®)

Everyone Needs an “Address” on the Information Highway.

The HIN®, a unique ID for identifying all trading partners, is designed to serve that purpose.

The HIN® was created by the healthcare industry as a universal identifier that would support the business needs of all trading partners in the supply chain during their electronic communications and transactions.

HIN Identifies Locations & Services

As a randomly assigned, nine-character, alpha-numeric identifier, HIN is extremely flexible. Not only can it identify specific health care facilities, but also specific locations and/or departments within them. HIN assignments currently identify more than 1 million locations and services both domestically and internationally, reflecting brick and mortar, functional, and legal entities.

The HIN System was designed to allow authorized licensees the ability to customize HIN use with their specific trading partners, while still maintaining standard formats the rest of the industry can recognize. By using the HIN System, each partner can quickly match information it receives to its own customer list whenever it shares or exchanges information with others. As a consequence, expensive and inefficient administrative cross-referencing tasks are eliminated.

By creating the HIN, HIBCC has created a system which simultaneously imposes the necessary rigidities of a centralized standard, while meeting the needs of individual users to alter components when necessary.

HIN Registration Is Easy

HIN is user driven; the data originates from information supplied by health care locations and facilities. We then independently validate and maintain the HIN data to ensure the information is correct and up-to-date. You can obtain your HIN here.

License the HIN Database

The HIN System is currently comprised of three separate databases: Human Health, Prescriber and Animal Health, each of which is offered under separate license. If you are interested in becoming a HIN licensee, be sure to read the documents available in the HIN resources section and complete the appropriate application on our License the HIN Database page.

The Health Industry Number (HIN) for Providers

The HIN is a unique and standardized identifier that enumerates hospitals, providers, suppliers, and all other partners doing business in the supply chain. It is the method used by your trading partners for identifying locations of services and activities at your facilities.

HIN information is available to you, as a hospital or provider, without charge, via your GPO (Group Purchasing Organization) or medical supplier/distributor.

Organizations are encouraged to periodically review and update their HIN assignments, as well as to request additional assignments for locations that have not yet been enumerated with a HIN.

As a Provider you may also access your HIN directly from HIBCC. The process can be initiated by completing the HIN request form in the Obtain Your HIN link below.

Please Review This Section Before Obtaining Your HIN

There is a $50 initial fee to obtain your HIN from HIBCC.

The facility must either be already open, or opening within 30 (calendar) days in order for the HIN to be assigned.

  1. The first step is to fill out the Data License Use Agreement.
  2. Next you will be redirected to a page where you will fill out additional information needed to assign the HIN, and you will enter your payment information.
  3. Once all proper paperwork is received, we will initiate a HIN request and once complete, your HIN assignment will be emailed to you.
